CATLIN: Ron Catlin passed away peacefully, with friends Wendy and Barb, by his side on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 in Palliative Care at Brandon Regional Health Centre. Ron was born on August 28, 1948 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In Ron’s younger years he moved to Ninette, Manitoba. During his time there, Ron befriended a group of ladies from Elgin. For many years to come, the Elgin United Church Women would send letters and cards to Ron in the mail. This was something he looked forward to each and every month. While living in Ninette, Ron was also part of the local mail service. He would assist daily with delivery of the mail.

In 1977, Ron was chosen to be a part of the Welcome Home Initiative. He moved to Brandon, Manitoba where he became part of the Westman Opportunities family. During this time, Ron also started work at COR Enterprises Inc. Ron enjoyed his time at COR assisting in the contract room. Thursdays he could be found in the office, helping get ready to do the banking. Fridays were equally as important as this was pay day! During his time Ron also was involved in supported employment. He had a weekly job at Pet Lover’s Warehouse, completing janitorial work. The best part of the job for Ron was going for a pop and apple fritter after.

In 2017, after 40 plus years of service Ron received his service ring from COR. At this time, he also decided it was time to retire. It was time to be able to relax and enjoy the simple things in life. Checking out trucks and semi-trailers from the comfort of Tim Horton’s was one of Ron’s more popular past times. The bigger the better! Trips to Winnipeg were also a favourite past time for Ron. Staying in a hotel, grabbing a good burger and excitedly cheering on his Jets was the perfect weekend!

In 1995, Ron moved into his new home with Westman Opportunities. Ron was so excited for the new larger home that he shared with his friends Joan, Jean, Shelagh, Jane, Shirley and Mike. Ron was proud of his home and liked to be involved in any changes or maintenance that was required.

Ron had a love of animals, dogs and cats in particular. He cared for his beloved cat Minew for many years. Ron also had the opportunity to visit and help with the animals at The Brandon Humane Society; visiting and petting all the animals there was one of Ron’s absolute favourite things. While relaxing at home, Ron enjoyed the comfort of his recliner while tapping his leg, singing along with his beloved Irish Rovers. Christmas was the best time of year for Ron. He would happily stand by the counter, sampling the food and treats being prepared. Opening presents was a serious mission for Ron, quickly getting through all of them to see what Santa had brought.

Left to mourn and lovingly remember Ron are his roommates: Jane, Shirley, Michelle, Miranda, Patty and Madeline. Ron also touched the lives of countless people that were involved in his life through the years. Every person Ron interacted with will most certainly have strong memories and good stories to tell.

Donations in Ron’s memory may be made to Brandon Human Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, MB, R7A 7M6.
